Biological analyses are an important step in the medical examination. They allow the screening, confirmation and/or the monitoring of metabolic, infectious, organic or constitutional diseases. They also allow the detection of any possible consumption of toxic substances (drugs, medications, alcohol) and, thus, providing a valuable help in the decision- making of the medical fitness.
Some disqualifying diseases:
- Diabetes requiring the use of insulin or any medication but biguanides,
- Sickle cell anemia
- Acute leukemia
- Kidney organic disease
- Sexual transmitted disease (HIV, hepatitis, syphilis…)
- Alcohol abuse, intake of psychotropic drugs with or without dependence
The reliability of the laboratory results is ensured by a qualified personnel and regular controls of quality.
The laboratory exam is the first step in the medical flight screening.
The blood and urinary samples are taken from 8h00 to 9h00 in the morning.
Patients have to fast around 12 hours and to respect sample-taking time.
The lab exams depend on patients’ specialty, age, and kind of medical screening (admission, routine exam, military/ civilian):
- Flyers other than pilots
- Air traffic controllers
- Paratroopers and airborne
- Aviation technicians
- Navy sailors
- Training courses
Further lab analysis may be requested, case by case, to push the investigations.
