Nowadays, human potential is becoming increasingly important in modern institutions that use scientific procedures to select their staff for a better investment of their training budget. The recruiting step becomes a critical time for the employer and the applicant. At the admission time, school degrees are taken into consideration; on the other hand, the results of a psycho evaluation become increasingly important.
At the aeromedical center (CEMEDA), the step of psycho-selection is provided by consultants in psychology. The evaluation focuses on the assessment of the skills, the study of personality, the appreciation of Conation, the identification of interests and values, etc.
Consulting tests are mainly based on:
- Testing: This is a psychological evaluation procedure performed through standardized psychometric tests. This test defines precisely the skills of individuals and if their adequacy to the job. Psychometric measures include required specific skills necessary to learning especially for aviation careers.
- Conducting recruiting interviews: A job interview is a meeting between the consultant psychologist and the candidate alone. It is a dedicated time to a better knowledge of the candidate's biography and to assess its consistency with the data collected in other
evaluation times.
- Group situation: it's a careful direct observation of the interaction of a group of candidates put together. This observation time is based on scientifically developed tools to assess
social behavior.
- Simulation of actual navigation situation: it is higher level in the selection, which uses a panel of psychometric tests integrated in a flight simulator. This system assesses specific skills, personality profile, psychomotricity and predisposition of applicants to pilot training.
- Traffic control situation: The air traffic controlling is a critical step in aviation safety. Indeed a good selection at the candidates’ admission phase is a guarantee of aviation safety; indeed, this candidate is asked to be the controller, the coordinator and the technical regulator and at the same time, to respect the international regulation of air navigation.
Psychology selection of air traffic controllers is a crucial step. It can adjust a recruiting decision using scientific methods to assess candidates' abilities and their psychosocial behaviors.
